Meet the Committee

Lizl Davel Lizl studied journalism at the University of Stellenbosch and after working in Namibia, bought Atlas Fire Security from her father in 1990.

She has since been actively involved in the fire industry and serves on bodies such as the Industrial Fire Technology Association and the SAQCC. She serves on the board of the CENTA Fire Group.
Astrid Wright Astrid has served on the FFETA executive committee since 2005 and was elected Vice Chairperson in 2007. She has also served on the SAQCC (Fire) executive committee since 2007.

Her involvement with the fire industry began in early childhood when she began assisting her father in his fire equipment company. After completing her studies in 2001, she joined the family business and is now an integral part of it, not only ensuring the day to day smooth running of the business, but also assuming sole responsibility for the functioning of their SANAS accredited Test Station.

She is one of the few female SAQCC(Fire) registered competent persons in the country and has quickly become recognised as a respected and important member of the fire industry.
Jeremy Kellett Jeremy has served on the FFETA executive committee since 1985 and was Chairman for the period 1998 to 2003. He has been involved with the fire industry since 1973 and is the managing director of his own fire equipment company. He is also a director and technical chairman of the CENTA Group of fire companies.

Jeremy is a founding member of the SAQCC (Fire), having served on their executive committee since its early beginnings in 1996. As chairman of their technical committee, he was appointed to oversee and edit the recent re-write of the SAQCC (Fire) Operations Manual. A further area of involvement is his participating membership of a number of SABS technical working committees, where he has been actively involved in the drafting and updating of various SANS standards for the fire industry.
Ivan Radmore Ivan went straight into the army after leaving school. Thereafter he spent three years with Prison Services, followed by a two year stint with the Security Branch. Ivan then moved into the retail sector and finally into manufacturing. After seven years gaining experience in the field, he left to start his own business, IBR Fire, which has thrived for 25 years with Ivan at the helm.
Pre Govender Pre has been employed in the fire industry for the past 20 years. He started his career from grass root levels as an assistant service technician for Arksun Fire Equipment and moved onto becoming a SAQCC Fire service technician, a position that he held for 12 years before joining Fire Check in 2010.

Pre joined Fire Check as a technician supervisor and quickly progressed into operations , he currently holds the position of Operations manager ,who’s solely responsible for its fire doors and fire stopping divisions as well as Fire Check’s SANAS accredited test station and ISO 9001 quality system .

Pre has studied towards a National Diploma in Safety Management via UNISA , completed a safety officers course through Action Training academy , is a qualified assessor , facilitator ,together with an array of fire and safety related certificates .
Rosemary Cowan Rosemary emigrated to South Africa in December 1989 and has been working for FFETA since May 1990 when her father, Frank Sims, was the Administrator. Following his death in July 1997, she took over his position as Administrator for FFETA and then of SAQCC (Fire) after its inception in 1999. She is also currently the Administration Manager for the South African Institute of Security.
Alan Echakowitz Alan Echakowitz was founding member of the SAQCC (Fire) (South African Qualifications Control Committee of Fire), and served as the chairperson of the disciplinary committee.

Alan became the owner of Combat Fire SA (Pty) Ltd (where he began working in 1998) in 2000.

At present, Alan also gives training in fire fighting and use of fire equipment as well as written specifications on emergency plans relating to fire hazards for various high-profile clients on behalf of his company.
John Caird After 22 years with the British Army Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, where he was involved in technical training, John joined Chubb Fire in Port Elizabeth in 1991 as Workshop Superviser, before moving on to Technical Sales Consultant, and Quality Control Coastal.

He moved to G-One-Fire in 2008 as Service Manager and then to Phoenix Fire Protection in 2012, where he runs the Safety and Training Departments.
Tom Dreyer Tom is the current Chairman of SAQCC Fire-1475, Tom is a registered competent person with FEST Extinguishing Services, a director of companies and the International Technical Competency Training University.

Tom lives in Potchefstroom with his wife and has three sons and one daughter. He is actively involved in all aspects of SAQCC (Fire), ECSA, SABS as well as being a member of the Executive Committee of FFETA for many years.

Belinda van der Merwe Belinda is the current manager at Delacon Fire in Centurion (since Agusut 2012). This includes management of the day-to-day activities of Delacon Fire, allocation of tasks, risk assessments, compilation of emergency evacuation plans, surveys, technical advice, quality control during and after work, liaison with clients, monthly inspections, writing of reports to clients and liaison with colleagues and service providers in other disciplines of the fire industry.

Belinda has a Baccalaureus degree in Town and Regional Planning (Cum Laude)(1986)(University of Pretoria), a B Com (Hons) Economics (Cum Laude)(1987)(university of Pretoria), IFE Level 2 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations and Safety (Institute for the Fire Engineers)(2013) and is a South African Qualification and Certification Committee (SAQCC) Fire Service Technician (SANS 1475)(No 15/126).

Belinda is registered as a Professional Planner at the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) since 1992, is a member of the Fire Engineering Association of South Africa (since 2015) and has been a member of the SAQCC Fire 1475 Committee and FFETA Executive Committee since 2016.
