Marine Safety

The supply and service of marine fire & safety equipment is regulated by The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), which regulates and controls safety equipment for all water craft, e.g. ski boats, yachts, motor boats, fishing boats and ships.

Through a Code of Practice, SAMSA regulates the supply and service of the following fire & safety equipment for marine craft:
• Fire extinguishers
• Fire hose & fittings
• Foam applicators
• Fire suppression systems
• Fire detection systems
• Breathing apparatus

All merchant ships are insured by a Class Society:
• Lloyds Registered Shipping
• Bureau Veritas
• American Bureau of Shipping
• Germanischer Lloyd

To supply or service fire and safety equipment on any Class Society insured vessels, the service provider must be audited and accredited by the relevant Class Society.

A fire company that sells or services fire equipment to marine craft must be audited annually to be certificated and approved by SAMSA. Check that your FFETA member complies with these requirements.
